Elizabeth “Betty” Carvalho, 80, of Honokaa died Friday, July 6, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kalopa, Honokaa, she was a retired Industrial Relations Office supervisor with the former Paauhau and Hamakua Sugar Companies. She was also a member of the Honokaa Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Honokaa Senior Citizens, Honokaa Saranay Club and the Visayan Club of Honokaa. Friends may call at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa on Thursday from 5-9 p.m., where a Mass will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also call at the Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo on Friday from 9-11 a.m., where a prayer service will be held at 11 a.m., followed by burial at the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery #2. Casual attire, no flowers. Survived by sons, Roger (Sonya) Carvalho of Hilo, Ray (Annie) Carvalho of Honokaa and Ricky (Kamomi) Carvalho of Hilo; brothers, Nicholas Enanoria of Honokaa and Andrew (Violet) Enanoria of Hayward, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Mieko Kobayashi, 96, of Hilo died July 15 at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Olaa, she was the owner of the former Kobe’s Delicatessen, member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and its Kyodan, Hoyukai and Buddhist Women’s Association, Urasenke Hilo Shibu, Hiroshima Kenjin Kai and Hui Okinawa. Private services held. No flowers and no koden. Survived by sons George Kobayashi of Oakland, Calif., Albert Kobayashi of Honolulu; daughter, Lois (Jerri) Shimizu of Hilo; brother-in-law, Masao Kobayashi of Papaikou; three grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. George Shizuo Kuwada, 91, of Kailua-Kona, formerly of Honolulu, died July 2, at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Honolulu, he was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and a retired Iolani School basketball and golf coach. Visitation at noon Saturday at Hosoi Garden Mortuary; Funeral service at 1 p.m. Casual attire. Daniel “Danny” Martines, 72, of Mountain View died Wednesday, July 4, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Holualoa, he was a master carpenter and a U.S. Navy veteran. Martha Hiroko Mayeda, 80, of Hilo, formerly of Honolulu, died June 25 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Kaiwiki, she was a retired bookkeeper for the former Hawaii Hearing Aid on Oahu. John P. Souza, 77, of Pepeekeo died Friday, July 6, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Pepeekeo, he was a private cane grower for the former Hilo Coast Processing Company, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou.
